Categorisation Guide

The following is the Storm and Silence Wiki's Categorisation Guide, which provides instruction for organization of articles. The purpose of this page is to thoroughly explain how articles are categorised as well as direct how to categorise them.

All articles will belong to at least one category. If editors would like to suggest or object categories, then please contact an administrator. Do not create new categories without confirmation from an administrator– otherwise they will be deleted.

DISCLAIMER: This guide will be continuously updated as categories are subject to addition, deletion or change.

Adding Categories

There are two types of ways to add categories to an article:

  1. Adding categories while editing the page:
    1. On the Source editor mode, add [[Category:Category's name]] to the bottom of the page.
    2. On the Visual editor mode, on the right-hand side, there will be the 'Categories' section. Type the Category's name into the box above the designated category space, and select the desired category from the drop-down menu. Afterwards, select 'Publish' to save changes.
  2. Adding categories while not editing the page:
Scroll down to the bottom of the page where the categories are of an article are displayed— this is right above the comment section. There is a fillable space, titled 'Add category'. When clicked on, the editor will be able to type in any category name. There is no need to include the [[Category: part, just start typing the name of the category. If it exists already, then select the desired category from the drop-down menu. When finished, click the 'Save' button, located in the right corner underneath and the category will be added.

Removing Categories

Be careful when removing categories, they were put there for a reason. Intentionally removing categories with malicious intent repeatedly can result in a ban on this wiki. However, perhaps an error was made and the editor wishes to correct it.

  • To remove a category, click the 'Edit' button at the top of an article. On the edit screen, on the right hand side, there will be boxes that list the article's categories. Hover the mouse over the name of the category that should be removed and click on the small trash can icon next to it. After the error has been corrected, select 'Publish' to save changes.

Categorising Pages

When to Categorise

Every article on the wiki should belong to at least one category, with the exception of talk pages, redirects, or user pages, though these may be placed in categories where appropriate. In addition, each categorised article should be placed in all of the most specific categories to which it logically belongs.

  • An article should never be left with a non-existent (redlinked) category on it. Either the category should be created, or else the link should be removed or changed to a category that does exist.

While it should typically be clear from an existing category's name which type of pages it contains, the description on the category page may sometimes provide additional information on potential category contents. One way to determine if suitable categories already exist for a particular page is to check the categories of pages concerning similar or related topics. Another way is to search existing category names. Since all categories form part of a hierarchy, do not add categories to pages as if they are tags.
