In the desert, an instant turns life into death and hate into love. In the desert, everything is different. Boundaries break down, and you find yourself doing things that you would never, ever have imagined.
Lilly Linton finds this out the hard way: in the shadow of the pyramids, she and her boss, cold, calculating Mr Ambrose, must face death and danger together. Is the desert's heat enough to melt the cold heart of Britain's richest financier?
Search And Reunion
On the North Sea, Lilly relentlessly searches for Mr Ambrose for five days with Captain Crockford of the Waterguard following the Urania's shipwreck. When the captain informs her that they are giving up the search and heading back, he emphasises that that the missing man cannot have survived dehydration or the ocean's glacier temperature. Lilly protests and the captain annoyedly retorts that it is not the Waterguard's responsibility to look for missing people. Exasperated with the captain's refusal, she motivates him by reminding him of Mr Ambrose's high social standing as a powerful and important financial magnate. He then calls in three more ships to help with the search and they find several corpses of other men. They scour the along the coast of Dover for many hours until one of the other ships signal over that a man who is alive has washed ashore.
They head over to the small village of St. Margaret's at Cliffe and Lilly parts ways with the captain, deciding to go alone. Trudging to the village's vicarage in the night, Lilly finds Vicar Dawson and asks him about the castaway. He tells her that the man is no longer under his care and is staying with a lady living at the end of the village named Mrs Fotheringay. The vicar directs her to her house and when Lilly arrives, she explains to Mrs Fotheringay that she is looking for a man who was with her during the shipwreck. Much to Lilly's relief, Mrs Fotheringay's personality and physical description of her guest matches those of Mr Ambrose. She then introduces Lilly to her daughter, Violet, and the two share immediate dislike towards each other. When Violet haughtily asks about Lilly's connection to the man, she unconvincingly lies that they are cousins. Nonetheless, Violet leads her to his room, but makes her wait in the hallway while she informs the man that someone is there to see him. After trying to unsuccessfully persuade the man into sending Lilly away, she gives up and leaves, letting Lilly into the room.
